What if…?

Trying out some poetry in preparation for our poetry writing unit:

What if there was no CCRAP test?

I might get to teach students what they need,

without the pressure of this test

in the background of my mind.

What if my worth as an educator

wasn’t decided by a standardized test?

I could stress less, smile more.

I could make a bigger difference.

What if there was no CCRAP test?

I would not be sitting here dreading going to school

Dreading the next few weeks of testing

And everything that goes along with it.

What if educators made the decisions?

There would be no CCRAP test.

Boredom

11454297503_e27946e4ff_hThere really isn’t time to be bored in our classroom and it is rarely silent.  But, that’s the way I like it.  This test has changed that…

I’m so proud of the kids for persevering through this test. They were using all of the strategies we taught them to solve problems.

I’m so proud of the kids  for staying quiet and following rules that don’t make any sense to them, like sitting in a silent room wasting time when everyone is already done with their test.

But, kids will always find a way to entertain themselves and our class is no different.  Most of the kids spent the second half of the block upside-down on their balls.   (We use yoga balls as chairs in our room.)  A lot of our kids used this experience to write their own slice of life.  You can read one of them if you click on the picture below.  I love our kids!

Oh PARCC…

11454297503_e27946e4ff_hAAHHHH!  A whole school PARCC practice test this afternoon.

AAHHHH!  A whole school PARCC practice test after several weeks of indoor recess.

AAHHHH!  A whole school PARCC practice test and two minutes in, one problem in, they are playing with the “tools” even though there is nothing to measure.

AAHHHH!  A whole school PARCC practice test and even I don’t understand what the questions are asking.

AAHHHH!  This was only a practice…the real thing is next week.

AAHHHH!  This was only a practice…the real thing will be spread over five days.

AAHHHH!  End of slice…
